Need Help? Crosscheck It!

My two youngest were sitting at the dinner table together. Aiden was talking to Garnet and I wasn’t paying much attention. Then all of a sudden what was muffled in the background of cleaning the kitchen became a little louder and clearer. I hear him yell, “Garnet! I want to show you something”. I still wasn’t paying too much attention but then I hear even louder, “Mommy, I’m trying to show Garnet something and she keeps shutting her eyes”. I look over and there’s Garnet with her eyes clenched shut. She peeks out at me and shrugs and says, “He’s keeps trying to show me something and I’m trying not to see it”. I couldn’t help but smile at her five-year-old grammar, voice, and attitude. She was obviously irritated with him but he was trying to help her. She rolled her eyes, shrugged her shoulders, and pursed her lips. She wanted to figure it out on her own, without anyone’s help.

At that moment, the Holy Spirit stirred my heart. He told me we’re like that all the time with Him. He is constantly whispering, “I want to show you something” but we continue on our way with our eyes clenched shut, and sometimes our fingers in our ears because we want to do it on our own. We want to try our way.

I know Garnet feels bossed around all the time, with two older siblings and parents telling her what to do. When it comes to her trying to do something on her own she fights for it. But that can be a very bad habit. The Holy Spirit is here to lead us and guide us in ALL things. Not some things.

John 16:13 says, “When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” You have a guide, you have a friend, you have someone who loves you so deeply.

Isaiah 30:21 says, “Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go,’ whether to the right or to the left.”

Quit clenching your eyes shut and take your fingers out of your ears. The Holy Spirit says to you today, “I want to show you something”.

When you feel like you don't need help or think you should do it on your own. Stop, take a breath and Crosscheck It.
